Japan support extended to School for Children with Special Needs in Gampaha

The Government of Japan has agreed to provide $ 150,496 (approx. Rs. 22.6 million) for ‘The Project for School Construction for Disabled Children in Gampaha District’ under the scheme ‘Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Securities Project’. This project will be implemented by the Sarvodaya Susitha Suwasetha Society, aiming to improve education and sanitation environment for disabled children and school teachers through construction of a new school building along with school furniture. The grant contract was signed on 20 March at the Susitha Suwasetha School for Special Education in Gampaha, between Ambassador of Japan Kenichi Suganuma and Susitha Suwasetha Seva School for Special Education Managing Director Methananda Dharmarathna.

Darmarathna mentioned, “Our Susitha Suwasetha Special School provides special education for the children with special needs in the Gampaha area. Through our school we help the children with special needs to sharpen their talents, healing them mentally, helping them to learn about day-to-day activities and educating them to gain recognition in the society. This school was started with five children in 1988 and now supports 47 students. This school has been progressing and achieving many titles through aesthetic and sports fields in special schools in the western province where opportunities have been made available for the students to show their talents annually through competitions. With this development, the much needed additional space for the school will be supported as a new school building through the generous funding from the Government of Japan. We highly appreciate the commitment of the people of Japan to support these children to ensure a better future for them.”
