Japan, as a long-time friend of Sri Lanka, is closely following the recent developments in Sri Lanka, including the dissolution of Parliament, the Japanese Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
“Japan hopes that the stability in Sri Lanka will continue to be ensured through due process in accordance with the law,” a statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry said referring to the current political situation in Sri Lanka.
The statement noted that President Sirisena dismissed Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and appointed former President Rajapaksa as Prime Minister on 26 October 2018. In addition, President Sirisena announced on 9 November that the Parliament of Sri Lanka would be dissolved and a General Election would be held on 5 January 2019.
