The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday criticised Jalani Premadasa, the wife of Housing and Construction Minister Sajith Premadasa, for her statement that she would be the future First Lady.
Premadasa, addressing an event on Saturday, said that she came in front of the crowd as the First Lady of the future President. Following the statement, various parties expressed their views on the matter.
SLPP Chairman Prof. G. L. Peiris told media yesterday their party was not facing any disagreements on their Presidential candidate or the future First Lady.
“These various statements have shown internal conflicts that have arisen within the United National Party (UNP), but we are not facing any challenges in naming our Presidential candidate. Our candidate will be named by Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he said.
He noted all political parties would back the Presidential candidate named by Rajapaksa. The parties backing SLPP had already unanimously agreed to vest power with Rajapaksa to name the Presidential candidate. Prof. Peiris said the SLPP would name a candidate who has the right qualities to win the election and gain the trust of all communities to develop the country for a better future.
