The Convocation of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place on 27 March when Saliya Pieris, PC will be inducted as the 26th President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, taking over from the incumbent President Kalinga Indatissa, PC who will complete two years in office.
The election to select the 26th President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka concluded on Wednesday with Saliya Pieris, PC being declared the winner having secured 5,162 votes against 2,807 votes secured by Kuvera De Zoysa, PC.
Saliya Pieris, PC secured 2,416 votes from the Colombo Zone and 2,746 votes from the other branches whilst Kuvera De Zoysa, PC received 1,146 votes from the Colombo Zone and 1,661 votes from the other Branches. The election was held in 85 Bars across the country and the results were declared last evening at the conclusion of the count by the Presiding Officer for the Election, Acting Solicitor General Sanjay Rajaratnam, PC.
Nominations for the post of President and Secretary of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka for the year 2021/2022 were handed over on 11 January. Two nominations were received for the post of President, that of Saliya Pieris, PC and Kuvera De Zoysa, PC, and one nomination for the post of Secretary, that of incumbent Secretary Rajeev Amarasuriya, Attorney-at-Law.
At the close of nominations on 11 January 2021, Rajeev Amarasuriya, Attorney-at-Law was declared uncontested as the Secretary of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka for the year 2021/2022 as well.
Rajeev Amarasuriya will also assume office as the Secretary of the BASL for 2021/2022 at this Convocation.
