Reuters:  Indian activists yesterday (28 February) denounced the construction of naval camps on an uninhabited island by Sri Lankan navy.

Tamil Nadu Fishermen’s Association Junior Secretary N.L Bose said the construction of camps at Katchatheevu Island was a ploy by China to check on India.

Katchatheevu Island, off the eastern seaboard in the Bay of Bengal, is frequently visited by Indian fishermen who use it as a destination to dry their nets and catch fish.

Ceded to Sri Lanka by former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1974, the uninhabited island of Katchatheevu remains a disputed territory between fishermen of the two neighbouring countries.
