Main Opposition Samagi Janatha Balawegaya (SJB) MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar this week met with Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt Hussein El Saharty in Sri Lanka. Markar noted the significant impact of Egyptians such as Ptolemy who mapped one of the first maps of Sri Lanka and the role of Orabi Pasha in initiating the Zahira College in Colombo. The Ambassador affirmed that Egypt stands ready to strengthen educational exchange programs in multiple academic fields with historic Al-Azhar University in Cairo for Sri Lankan students. A framed picture of Masjidul Abrar of Beruwala, the 1,100-year-old first recorded mosque in Sri Lanka was gifted to Ambassador El Saharty.
