Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a Sri Lankan man who was attempting to smuggle in gold worth around Rs. 13 million.
According to the Customs officials, the suspect, a resident of Batticaloa, was arrested on suspicion upon arrival from Malaysia via Singapore on an Emirates flight EK 349, early yesterday morning (23 March) around 3 am.
According to the spokesman, the suspect had a large number of finished 22-karat gold jewellery weighing 2.36 kg concealed in his luggage. He was arrested at the departure lounge when he attempted to leave through the Green Channel.
The suspect is identified as an engineer in his passport, but upon questioning it was learned that he was a jewellery businessman.
Airport Customs has seized the gold jewellery. The suspect is being questioned by Customs officials.
