Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara has been given a timeframe of 14 days by the Constitutional Council to implement the recommendations made by the National Police Commission.

During yesterday’s meeting of the Constitutional Council at the parliamentary complex, presided over by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, the issue of the ongoing disagreement between the National Police Commission (NPC) and the IGP – where the IGP had refused to implement recommendations made by the NPC – was taken up.

The NPC had complained to the Constitutional Council that it could not force the IGP to accept and implement its recommendations.

The promotion of Kilinochchi SSP Palitha Siriwardana, promotions of 129 officers who were political victimised, dismissal of OIC Narammala from his post, inquiry into the educational qualifications of DIG Nalaka De Silva, and the suspension of the Officer in Charge of the Statistics Division were among the recommendations of the NPC the IGP had refused to implement.

The IGP in turn had informed the Constitutional Council that he could not implement the NPC recommendations for several reasons.

He had pointed out that some of the 129 officers who were recommended for promotions due to political victimisation by the former Government were known to have close connections with the earlier regime, raising serious doubts regarding the vetting process utilised by the NPC to propose promotions.

However, the Constitutional Council informed the IGP that he expected to implement the recommendations of the National Police Commission and that he had 14 days to do so, after which he is to inform the Council on the progress.
