“I will always stand by the people,” assures President

President Maithripala Sirisena says all the people in this country, irrespective of race, religion and colour differences, together elected him to the Office of President with boundless hopes of establishing a free and democratic society as well as creating a clean political movement, and further said that he will achieve those expectations always working with the people. 

He made these remarks addressing a public rally held in Batticaloa on 21 January. A large crowd gathered at this public rally held in Batticaloa, a majority of whom were from the Tamil community. The President in his address further said that he will always stand for the rights of the people irrespective of their differences. 

President Sirisena said that he will establish a new organisation to work with him to solve issues of the people while accelerating development activities in the Batticaloa District, and further said that to achieve success in this process, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) should be victorious at the forthcoming Local Government polls.

The President extended an invitation to the people to join hands with the SLFP irrespective of differences to take the country forward and create a clean political movement. He emphasised that people should not pardon persons who robbed public funds and added that he is also not ready to pardon anyone.

President Sirisena received a warm welcome at the rally, which was organised by SLFP Organiser (Batticaloa District) G. Haridarangiri. Sri Lanka People’s National Front Secretary-General Vishnu Kanthan and many other SLFP activists also participated in this meeting. Former Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal Treasurer and former Eravur Pattu Pradeshiya Sabha Deputy Chairman Thambinayagam Kalendran joined the SLFP extending his support to the President.
