Following information gathered by the newly-appointed Comptroller General of the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media, the Government has issued instructions to discard 7,723 State-owned vehicles not in running condition.
Approval was given by the Cabinet to go ahead with the exercise, Cabinet Co-Spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday.
According to gathered data, State institutions and provincial and local governments currently own 57,961 vehicles, out of which 50,238 are in running condition. The Central Government uses 26,732 of them while public enterprises own another 23,506 vehicles.
Out of the 7,723 vehicles which are not in running condition, the Central Government owns 5,922 while public enterprises hold another 1,801.
“All heads of institutions have been advised to dispose of these vehicles immediately,” Senaratne said. The Government decided to instruct officials to dispose of vehicles which are not in running condition with immediate effect.
