The Government has received Cabinet approval to declare an annual road safety week from this year onwards, as it seeks to draw special attention to minimising motor accidents.
According to the Cabinet Spokesman, approximately 8-10 lives are lost per day due to motor accidents at present – most of them male. Due to this situation, their dependents fall helpless and there is an increasing trend in this number every year.
There were 2,023 fatal accidents last year with 2,114 fatalities. Out of them, 963 were motorcycle accidents leading to 987 deaths. Around 500 deaths are reported annually from three-wheeler and lorry accidents.
Considering all these facts, the National Council on Road Safety has set its eyes on implementing a road safety week from 21 November, which is the international day for commemorating the victims of road accidents and will take the necessary steps to increase awareness among private institutions, school children, drivers and the public, to minimise motor accidents.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the proposal tabled by the Minister of Transport, with the declaration of a national week on road safety on Sunday 21 November and every November thereon.
