The Government has decided to boost the national accountability mechanism to deal with the unresolved human rights issues of the conflict.
“Sri Lanka has established several independent investigation commissions for seeking reconciliation after the conflicts. The accomplishment of all the recommendations of those commissions is vital,” the statement comprising weekly Cabinet decisions issued by the Government Information Department noted. It also added that the requirement of an independent local mechanism to search for the truth as a meaningful way to bring forward the peace achieved after ending the conflicts sustained for 30 years and to secure it is apparent.
In a joint proposal, the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday approved to take necessary actions to implement the concept of truth and reconciliation mechanism.
The proposal to this effect was submitted jointly by the President, Prime Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Fisheries, Education, Justice and Urban Development approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday.
