The German Embassy in Sri Lanka financially supported the construction of latrines in underprivileged communities and hamlets in Kinniya, Trincomalee.
The construction was executed by the embassy’s project partner the Serving Humanity Foundation.
The civil war as well as the tsunami in 2004 inflicted a major toll on the economic development of communities in the east of Sri Lanka. Therefore even in 2019, toilets were not freely available to families in the region’s rural areas. Living conditions are still quite modest and it is still common to see residents relieving themselves outdoors in these areas. The lack of proper sanitation means there is inadequate privacy, safety and hygiene for all these residents.
The German Embassy in Sri Lanka considers the construction of sanitation facilities and the improvement of living conditions in rural areas an important task for hygienic and healthcare reasons. Furthermore, the construction of latrines gives women added security from sexual harassment and sexual assault.
The sanitation facilities were provided to 35 families. The construction of the latrines was completed in 2019, with Ambassador Jorn Rohde recently visiting the project.
