Gazette to be issued on COVID-19 safety guidelines

A gazette is to be issued by tomorrow making it a legal offence to disobey COVID-19 safety guidelines in territories considered disease-prone areas by the Director General of Health Services, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said yesterday.

“I will be issuing Gazette papers within the next two days allowing legal action to be taken against all persons who do not comply with safety guidelines,” she added.

Wanniarachchi explained that the Government is taking various measures to protect the health of the public and that the Gazette will include safety regulations like wearing face masks, maintaining 1 m physical distancing, and monitoring the temperature of persons who enter certain premises.

According to Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana, the Gazette will also include safety guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Once issued, persons who are found violating safety guidelines can face six months’ imprisonment and a fine not exceeding Rs. 10,000.
