Prof. G.L. Peiris of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna rebel group aka the ‘Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa’ has warned the Government he would take legal action against it if it attempts to postpone elections under the guise of amending electoral laws.
The Parliamentarian accused President Ranil Wickremesinghe of attempting to postpone the already delayed local Government elections by putting forth false narratives as his Government is unable to face an election due to public opinion.
Peiris speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday said the Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa along with other Opposition parties will work together against the delay in holding elections. “We will take legal action against any such attempt as well,” he said. According to Peiris, the Government is attempting to remain in power without holding elections in fear of the people.
Prof. Peiris said the President’s recent statement that steps will be taken to amend the number of members at councils and transfer powers of the chairman to a committee and amend election laws related to local Government bodies, highlights a push towards the postponement of elections.
He emphasised that holding elections in a timely manner is a fundamental right of the people. “We will work within the democratic framework to protect the people’s right to universal suffrage and the right to vote,” he said, adding his group has faith in Sri Lanka’s legal system.
