  • Move comes day after controversial phone call records surface
  • Report on allegation to be sent to NPC by IGP in two weeks

 

Former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director SSP Shani Abeysekara was interdicted with effect from yesterday, and transferred to Police Headquarters by the National Police Commission

According to the Police Media Unit, the reason for his interdiction was causing disrepute to the service through telephone conversations that were subsequently leaked to the media. 

The action against the former CID head comes days after the arrest of United National Party MP Ranjan Ramanayake led to the release of the controversial telephone recordings allegedly between the MP, Abeysekara and others.   

The NPC has instructed the acting IGP C.D Wickramaratne to investigate the allegations against Abeysekara and submit an initial report within two weeks. 

Abeysekara was transferred following the change of Government.
