Former Archbishop of Colombo Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis passed away at the age of 90 while receiving treatment at a private hospital yesterday.
Archbishop Emeritus of Colombo Oswald Gomis, was born on 12 December 1932 and was ordained a Priest of the Archdiocese of Colombo, on 3 February 1958.
On 9 April 1968, he was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo and was ordained on 17 July 1968. After 27 years of service to the Archdiocese of Colombo, he was appointed as the Bishop of Anuradhapura on 2 November 1995 and on 6 July 2002, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Colombo, succeeding late Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando, the then Archbishop of Colombo.
He also served as the Chancellor of the University of Colombo between 2002 and 2021.
Archbishop Oswald Gomis retired as the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Colombo, on 16 June 2009.
