Five pro-China organisations in Sri Lanka have issued a statement on the Hong Kong National Security legislation.
The five are Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association, Sri Lanka-China Society, Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation, Sri Lanka-China Journalists’ Forum and the Sri Lanka-China Buddhist Friendship Association. The statement is as follows: “We emphasise that Sri Lanka and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China have been enjoying a historical and socioeconomic link with each other, which brings benefits to both sides.
“We condemn the escalating violence, terrorist activities, and shameless foreign interference in Hong Kong since 2019 which has badly affect its peace, stability and prosperity, damaging a common interest of Hong Kong and the whole region in beyond.
“We believe national security is a fundamental precondition for the existence and socioeconomic development of any country including Sri Lanka and China.
“We share similar painful history of separatism, terrorism and foreign interference in the past decades in Sri Lanka, and resolutely safeguard the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity while firmly oppose any foreign interference.
“We understand that in all countries, unitary and federal alike, only the state legislature has the legislative power on issues concerning national security.
“We are pleased and encouraged to see the National People’s Congress of China has adopted decision to make Hong Kong national security laws, which will definitely enhance peace, stability and prosperity of Hong Kong and the whole region. “We believe the new national security law for Hong Kong will not only abide by but also enhance the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ and guarantee the legitimate rights of people of Hong Kong.
“We extend our concrete support and sincere wishes to Hong Kong for its brighter future and a better cooperation with Sri Lanka.”
