The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan community in Myanmar organised a special charity program for the distribution of dry rations to 500 poor families living in Hlaing Thayar Township in Myanmar to mark Poson Full Moon Poya Day that was celebrated on 16 June. The event was held at Tharthana Hita Karyi Chapel in Hlaing Thayar Township in Yangon, Myanmar.
The ceremony was held under the patronage of the Ambassador Nandimithra Ekanayake, with the participation of a large gathering. At the inaugural ceremony, the Ambassador explained the religious and historical importance of Poson Full Moon Poya Day, which marks the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Arahath Mahinda in the 3rd Century BCE. He also expressed the importance of Vesak Full Moon Poya Day which was celebrated on 18 May by the Buddhist devotees. The speech delivered by the Ambassador was translated into Burmese language for the awareness of the people of Township who received the goods.
At the conclusion of the event, the Officer of Hlaing Thayar Township thanked the Ambassador and the Sri Lankan gathering for carrying out a charity program on this special day on behalf of their people.
