The Election Commission of Sri Lanka (EC) yesterday made a special undertaking before the Supreme Court to make necessary arrangements to conduct the upcoming polls according to the Local Government Elections Act following the submission of nominations.
The EC assured the Supreme Court in this regard when two petitions filed by a group of Parliamentarians were taken up before the courts yesterday. The petitioners are requesting the courts to issue an order to the EC, directing it to take the necessary steps to hold the local Government polls as scheduled.
Appearing on behalf of the EC, Saliya Peiris PC said nominations have been called for the elections which will end on 21 January. He said following this, the election will be held in accordance with the Act.
One petition was submitted by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Prof. G.L. Peiris, while the other petition was submitted by Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara, Lakshman Kiriella, M.A. Sumanthiran and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.
Election Commission Chairman Nimal Punchihewa and its members along with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena were named as respondents in the petitions.
