Customs nab 2 Sri Lankans smuggling illegal cigarettes

Sri Lanka Customs officials have arrested two Sri Lankan passengers at the Katunayake Airport for attempting to illegally bring a stock of cigarettes into the country from Singapore.

Customs Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said the two suspects are businessmen aged 30 and 33 years old and are residents of Boralesgamuwa.

The stock of 14,500 sticks of cigarettes, packed in 72 cartons and 10 packets, were hidden in their travelling bags. According to the customs officials, the seized cigarettes were estimated to be worth nearly Rs. 725,000.

The Customs have confiscated the stock of foreign cigarettes and imposed fines of Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 10,000 on the two suspects. (Colombopage)
