Compensation for victims of 2014 Beruwela violence

  • Families of 3 dead will be paid Rs. 2 million each 

The Government this week decided to award compensation to victims who were affected by the communal violence that occurred in Beruwela in June 2014. 

According to Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Minister D.M. Swaminathan, three people died in the clashes between Sinhala Buddhists who attended a Bodu Bala Sena rally and the residents in the predominantly Muslim area of Beruwela on 13 and 14 June 2014. The families of those who lost their lives will be paid Rs. 2 million as compensation. The Government will also pay a maximum of Rs. 500,000 as compensation to any individual who was injured in the violence. According to ministry statistics, 12 people were injured in the incident. A proposal made by Swaminathan to pay compensation was approved by Cabinet.
