The Government has agreed as a matter of policy to give promotions to Police Constables (PC)s, Women Police Constables (WPC)s, Sergeants, Sub-Inspectors and Inspectors of Police who have been stagnating in the same rank without promotions for more than 10 years.
A Cabinet proposal to give the overdue promotions to many in the lower rungs of the Sri Lanka Police submitted by State Minister of Defence Chamal Rajapaksa was approved by Cabinet.
Cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that due to the lack of a proper methodology for promotions in the Police Department, many stagnate in the same rank for many years even though they fulfil the necessary qualifications to get promotions.
As a result of this irregularity, around 50 Fundamental Rights cases have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the promotions granted at several instances. To overcome this aberration, a committee appointed by the Police headquarters has studied the situation and prepared a set of proposals which are in the process of being implemented, the Minister said.
