The Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Highways Ministry to construct 5,000 pedestrian and vehicular bridges in rural areas in the country.
“The aim is to improve infrastructure and access in rural areas,” Cabinet Spokesperson Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday, adding that construction of the bridges falls under the Government’s Rural Road Network Rehabilitation Program aimed at renovating 1,000 kms of rural roads.
According to the Cabinet Office, the Rural Roads and Other Infrastructure State Ministry, under the purview of the Highways Ministry, has planned to construct 5,000 rural bridges.
