  • Sub-Postmaster allegedly assaulted in Hambantota while delivering pensions
  • Says “tremendous” responsibility taken by public sector and deserve support from masses

A Police complaint has been made on an assault made on a Sub-Postmaster who was on duty at Rukmalpitiya in Hambantota by several individuals, Cabinet Spokesman and Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said yesterday.

The Sub-Postmaster was assaulted while he was delivering pension to a paralysed individual at his residence. According to Gunawardena, the Sub-Postmaster is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at the Rukmalpitiya Hospital.

“This is an unacceptable incident. The Sub-Postmaster was carrying out his duties. I have requested Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne to conduct an investigation into the incident and arrest those responsible,” he said.

The Minister pointed out that the Government would take necessary measures to ensure the safety of public officials who were carrying out their duties at a time of national crisis while a curfew was in force.

“The curfew is in effect to prevent the spread of COVID-19, therefore State officials including Public Health Inspectors (PHIs), Samurdhi officers, agri development officers and others are doing a tremendous job and they are risking their lives to serve the people at this moment.”

He requested the Acting IGP to take tough action against those obstructing Government officials in carrying out their duties.
