The COVID-19 death toll yesterday exceeded 100, with health authorities confirming eight deaths from Colombo.
According to the Department of Government Information (DGI), a resident of Colombo 9 was transferred from the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital to the Homagama Base Hospital after she tested positive for COVID-19. She died of cancer and exacerbated COVID-19 pneumonia yesterday. She was 54 years old.
A 36-year-old man was transferred from the National Hospital of Sri Lanka to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases after he tested positive for COVID-19. He was a resident of Colombo 15 and died of an exacerbation of COVID-19 with chronic lung disease yesterday.
The DGI adds that an 83-year-old man from Colombo 2 passed away at home on 26 November. The cause of death is cited as a heart attack associated with COVID-19.
A 58-year-old woman also died at home on 26 November. She was a resident of Maligawatte and died of diabetes, chronic kidney disease and a heart attack associated with COVID-19.
Health authorities also confirmed the death of a 69-year-old resident of Colombo 13 as COVID-19-related. He died at home on 25 November from chronic lung disease and COVID-19 pneumonia aggravated by asthma.
A 70-year-old detainee of the Colombo Magazine Prison died in the prison hospital on 25 November. He died of a kidney infection exacerbated by COVID-19. A 78-year-old resident of Maradana died at home on 25 November. She died of a heart attack associated with COVID-19. An 87-year-old resident of Colombo 13 died at home on 23 November. The cause of death is cited as a stroke and a heart attack associated with COVID-19.
According to the Epidemiology Unit’s situation reports, only 20 COVID-19 deaths had been recorded in the island by 1 November. Thus, a total of 87 deaths occurred in November, with the emergence of the Divulapitiya and Peliyagoda COVID-19 clusters the previous month.
