The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday informed the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court that it will launch a new investigation with a fresh group of detectives into the charges made against Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen.
Dr. Shihabdeen was present in Court while the new probe was announced.
The CID told the Court that the new probe will be headed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police and sought Court permission to proceed. The Court approved the probe, granting permission to seek evidence on the related charges.
Dr. Shihabdeen was accused of amassing assets through suspicious means, and performing illegal sterilisation surgeries. He was released on bail in July after being arrested on the charges and being remanded.
The CID had earlier informed Court that there was no evidence to back the allegations against the doctor and he was later given bail.
