President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday that the Government had decided to declare 29 April to 6 May as the week for the revival of the true precepts of Buddhism to coincide with Vesak.

The Vesak full moon is commemorated on 29 and 30 April and the Vesak Week will continue to be celebrated till 6 May.

To facilitate this, the Government has already decided to postpone the May Day to 7 May with Monday declared as a public and mercantile holiday.

The move was following a request from the Maha Sangha that the May Day rallies and labour day celebrations be held on 7 May this year instead of 1 May due to the Vesak Festival.
