Director General, Asanga Abeyagoonasekera of the National Security Think Tank (INSSSL) was invited by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) to attend the 17th Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore recently.
The IISS Asia Security Summit ‘The Shangri-La Dialogue’ (SLD) is a ‘Track One’ inter-governmental security forum held annually by an independent think tank, the IISS, which is attended by defence ministers, permanent heads of ministries and military chiefs of Asia-Pacific states.
IISS Shangri-La Dialogue is Asia’s premier defence summit, a unique meeting of ministers and delegates from over 50 countries. There were 40 ministerial-level delegates, close to 30 chiefs of defence forces and senior defence officials, as well as prominent academics from 43 countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the keynote speaker for the SLD this year. The Dialogue’s agenda is intentionally wide-ranging, reflecting the many defence and security challenges facing a large and diverse region. Each year it recognises emerging as well as established regional security concerns. Prof. Abeyagoonasekera was invited for a special panel session on ‘India-China relations: Prospects for cooperation and competition’.
