Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has commenced a probe into the alleged video footage where a person in military uniform was supporting mob attackers in Thummodara on last Monday.
The video footage, which shows a uniformed man with the mob attackers, has first published by the Colombo Telegraph and is now going viral on social media.
Overall Operational Commander Maj. Gen. Sathyapriya Liyanage told the Daily FT that a team of officials has been appointed to investigate the allegation. “This has happened in somewhere in Thummodara, and we still do not believe any of our soldiers would have helped the attackers, but we will investigate this allegation soon,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Liyanage, who is also the Commander, Security Forces – West, said that the tensed situation in the North Western Province had been controlled with deploying additional troops.
“If the allegations were proved, the SLA would take stern actions against the perpetrators,” he said.
Meanwhile, the SLA, issuing a statement, said that their attention had been drawn to the video footage where a person dressed in a uniform similar to that of the Army was watching while a group of violent saboteurs was in action in the general area of Thummodara on Monday.
“The Army, on watching this particular video clip, has launched a special inquiry to identify the person suspected to be a military member. The public is also advised to help the Army to trace this person for necessary action,” it has stated.
The SLA said if the inquiry confirms that the person in question happened to be an Army member, the Army will take all necessary disciplinary actions against the said member.
The Army also request to inform to Special Investigation Unit of Corps of Military Police on 0112514280 if they possess any information on the alleged claim.
