Former Ports Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has stepped down from leading the United National Party (UNP) in the Gampaha District.

Ranatunga in a letter addressed to UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that he did not think it was appropriate for him to hold the post of UNP Leader for Gampaha District, as Ruwan Wijewardene who also campaigned from Gampaha District was now the Deputy Leader of the UNP.

The resignation comes in the wake of the UNP still being undecided about who will represent the party in Parliament through the National List seat it secured during the August General Elections.

Responding to a question regarding the National List vacancy, the UNP said that the matter was yet decided yet and that the party’s Working Committee would decide on it soon.
