Ambassador Jayatilleka attends Trialogue Club meeting on ‘Indo-Pacific Strategy: A Memo for Eurasia’

On 28 May, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka accompanied by Sanja Jayatilleka attended a meeting on ‘The Indo-Pacific Strategy: A Memo for Eurasia’. The discussion was held at Trialogue Club International, a meeting place for the Russian and foreign diplomats, politicians and experts to discuss foreign and security policies. The meeting is co-organised by the Trialogue Club International, PIR Centre and the Institute of Contemporary International Studies of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

General Evgeny Buzhinskiy, Chairman of the Trialogue Club and PIR Centre Executive board, addressed the audience with introductory remarks on current international security agenda. Albert Zulkharneev, Director of PIR Centre, Research Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary International Studies, Russian MFA Diplomatic Academy, briefed on the activity of PIR Centre, that marked 25th anniversary this year, underscored the results of the International School of Global Security and spoke about the joint projects of PIR centre for Non-Proliferation studies. 

Andrey Baklitskiy, Consultant of PIR Centre, Research Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary International Studies, Russian MFA Diplomatic Academy made presentation on the outcomes of the Iranian Nuclear Issue.

Dr. Sumsky, Director of the ASEAN Centre at MGIMO University and one of the main Russian experts on Asia-Pacific Region, delivered a keynote speech on the Indo-Pacific Region concept and its role in shaping the security architecture in Eurasia. Dr. Sumsky underlined that Indo-Pacific was not an extension of the Asia-Pacific initiative and had no ‘developmental’ component. He also emphasised that naval issues were given high priority in the Indo-Pacific concept, while the region was more interested in economic development rather than security aspects only.

Dr. Kirill Barsky, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, participated in the exchange of perspectives.

During the discussion part of the meeting Ambassador Jayatilleka made a substantial intervention.
