Ambassador Musthafa M. Jaffeer presented his credentials to the President of Colombia Iván Duque Márquez on 12 September at the Palacio de Nariño in Bogotá, Colombia, concurrently accrediting the former as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Colombia with residence in Brasília, Brazil.
At a solemn ceremony held at the Presidential Palace, President Marquez received the credentials from Ambassador Jaffeer in the presence of Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo. At this occasion, the Colombian President expressed his desire to witness further progress in bilateral and economic ties between the two countries in the coming years.
Prior to the ceremony, the Sri Lankan Ambassador called on the Foreign Affairs Minister Trujillo and handed over the open copies of the credential papers. Minister Trujillo, who hosted a luncheon in honour of the new envoys that day, briefed them on the current foreign policy priorities of his country. He also urged the countries present to take advantage of the open-economic policies of Colombia to increase bilateral trade, tourism and investment ties.
Ambassador Jaffeer expressed Sri Lanka´s keenness in finding a positive outcome to the current discussions with the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on concluding an agreement on Mutual Visa Exemption for Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders of the two countries and a Memorandum of Understanding on areas such as bilateral political consultations, technical co-operation and the fight against transnational crimes.
