All schools closed until Friday

All schools in the country will remain closed this week given the spread of COVID-19 across the island, the Government yesterday stated.

The decision comes a day after the Education Ministry announced that only schools in the Western Province and North Western Province will remain closed.

However, making a statement yesterday, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said: “The Government has decided to close all schools, preschools and piriven institutions in the island until 30 April. During the weekend, we will hold discussions with health units, provincial directors of education, and principals and make a decision regarding the school week beginning on 3 May.”

He added that priority will be given to children’s health when making decisions about schools.
