UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 2014, piloted by India declaring 21 June each year as the ‘International Day of Yoga’. The resolution was supported by more than 170 countries, with Sri Lanka being one of the first cosponsors of the resolution.
Yoga, like Ayurveda, forms a part of shared heritage of India and Sri Lanka. Since 2015 International Day of Yoga has been celebrated throughout the country with participation of thousands of yoga enthusiasts.
This year, a mega public event would be held to celebrate the Fifth International Day of Yoga, on Saturday from 6 a.m. at the Independence Square Park.
Ministry of Culture, Govt. of Sri Lanka, Tata Motors and eminent yoga institutes of Sri Lanka such as Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Ram Krishna Mission, Astanka Yoga Mandir, Sethsada Yoga, Hatha Yoga Centre, Kriya Babaji Yoga Aranyam, Dhamya Yoga, Institute of Human Excellence, Brahma Kumari Raja Yoga Centre, The Art of Living, My Yoga Lounge, Sakthi Anand Yoga School (Batticaloa), Adhi Yogam, Arogya Anahata Yoga,Samskruti Patanjali Yoga Centre and Rhythmic Yoga are partnering for this mega event.
All are cordially invited for a rejuvenating session of yoga, pranayama and meditation. Participation in the event is free. Please bring along yoga mats. Participation certificate will be given to all by the High Commission of India.
