A total of 4,625 persons received COVID-19 vaccines on Sunday, raising the number of persons to receive the first dose of a vaccine to 1,948,187 and the second dose to 353,302.
The second dose had been previously administered only to Sri Lankans who received the AstraZeneca vaccine, but administration of the second dose of Sinopharm to Sri Lankans commenced today.
Both doses of Sinopharm have been administered to 2,435 Chinese nationals working in the country.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, 146 persons received the second dose of AstraZeneca on Sunday. The first dose of the vaccine has been administered to 925,242 persons.
On Sunday, 4,479 persons received the first dose of Sinopharm, bringing the number to receive the first dose of the vaccine so far to 957,959.
In addition to this, 64,986 persons have received the first dose of Sputnik V.
Meanwhile, vaccination of pregnant women is expected to commence on 9 June, with the first phase of the program targeting women over the age of 35, women with medical conditions, and women over the age of 30 who are obese. Frontline workers who are pregnant will also be eligible for the vaccine.
“The Health Ministry has decided to begin vaccination of pregnant women who may develop COVID-19 complications after contracting the disease or face a higher risk,” Family Health Bureau Director Dr. Chithramali de Silva said.
