31,000 expatriate Lankans get dual citizenship

A large number of Sri Lankans who had obtained citizenship in other countries are applying for dual citizenship in Sri Lanka, the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration Nihal Ranasinghe revealed.

Since 2015 March, 31,000 have been granted dual citizenship, the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration said.

Each applicant for dual citizenship is required to pay Rs. 300,000 and Rs. 50,000 each for their spouse and children.

The Controller General said the Immigration and Emigration Department is receiving a large number of applications for dual citizenship and the department is taking measures to expedite the review of applications and granting dual citizenship to eligible applicants.
