Sri Lanka will hold its 8th annual Deyata Kirula National Development program next year in the Puttalam, Kurunegala and Kegalle districts, the Economic Development Ministry announced this week.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa recently met with the political leaders, policy planners, ministry secretaries and other senior officials to plan the event.
The annual event, held since 2006 to coincide with the Independence Day on 4 February, aims to develop an underdeveloped area of the country. The exhibition brings massive infrastructure development, especially roads and public facilities to the area slated to hold the Deyata Kirula exhibition.
The program next year will cover 2,731 Grama Niladhari divisions coming under 57 divisional secretariats in the three districts where the total number of beneficiaries will be 3.2 million, the Ministry said.
Under the program 42,404 thatched houses are due to be renovated, 44,432 people to be provided with drinking water and power to be supplied to 108,439 houses without electricity.
The program aims to promote tourism in the three districts and the tourism promotion officials and people in the 28 electorates of the three districts will be encouraged to develop areas of scenic beauty, build guest houses and lodges and develop cottage industries, the Ministry said.
The Gama Neguma development program will handle the spiritual and social development, improvement of livelihood, construction of rural roads and small irrigation systems, and opening of maternity clinics while the Pura Neguma program will develop infrastructure facilities to increase the Gross National Production two-fold by 2016.
The President has instructed that all work on the 2014 Deyata Kirula be completed before 31 January 2014.
