Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO) recently arranged a ‘Nano Mileage Rally’ to further emphasise and consolidate the TATA Nano as the most fuel efficient family car in the market. Almost 50 Nano owners took part in this rally, which covered a distance of 70km from Colombo to Negombo and back.

Representatives from DIMO and TATA Motors were present at this inaugural event. Each Nano car was topped up with a full tank of fuel and sealed with a security sticker. Each car had to go through several checkpoints on its way to Negombo and back.

Once the car returned, trained technicians measured the consumed fuel amount by refilling the tank. And all data were tabulated.

Surprisingly there were some cars which achieved a fuel efficiency of over 40km per litre, while the average fuel efficiency was 25km per litre. All customer cars managed fuel efficiency over 18km per litre.

The drivers who attained the best fuel efficiencies were recognised by way of cash awards.

Cash awards were handed over by DIMO Chairman Ranjith Pandithage, DIMO CEO Gahanath Pandithage, TATA Passenger Cars Head Yasantha Wijesekera and TATA Motors, India Regional Head S. Ragunathan

The TATA Nano, brainchild of Ratan Tata is a technological wonder from TATA Motors. It has more space than other Indian and Malaysian family cars, has several options (power shutters, central locking, A/C, stereo with CD player, Bluetooth hands-free kit etc.) which comes with a four year/90,000 km warranty and three complete free services upto 15,000 km. It is undoubtedly stylish and probably the most economical vehicle to drive in the market.  Moreover it comes in a variety of colours, which is eye candy.

With almost 2500 units sold within the first few months since the launch, the TATA Nano is the preferred choice of the entry level executive. The Nano is also preferred by individuals who use high end Japanese and European cars, as their second or third vehicle – and mainly used to do daily errands due to its cost effective travelling and easy manoeuvring.

DIMO introduced the TATA Nano to Sri Lanka in May 2011, during the 50 year celebrations of DIMO and TATA.

Sri Lanka was the first export country of TATA Motors, when we got the first truck chassis in 1961 and Sri Lanka became the first export country for the Nano in 2011.
