Lighting up the season with unique fare which is sure to make every racing enthusiast’s pulse beat faster, is the ‘Colombo Night Races’ scheduled for 16 and 17 December featuring Formula McLarens 1300 race among others.

A minimum of 10 cars powered by 1.3 litres Suzuki Maruti petrol engines are expected to contest the Formula McLarens 1300 category race of 10 laps, run on the specially prepared 2.2 Km track in Colombo Fort.

One of the Formula 1300 contestants, Racing Driver Nigel Perera who is sponsored by AMW – Suzuki Maruti took time out from his practice sessions at Pannala last week to answer a few questions about the night races.

“Although I’ve done a lot of racing over the 10 years, I am thrilled to be racing a Formula McLarens 1300 car.  It’s a special experience that I won’t exchange for anything! The fact that the Formula McLarens 1300 cars are powered by the ever reliable 1.3 litre Suzuki Maruti engines makes me very confident that I should be able to handle any racing condition and easily complete the race without worrying about it. The power to weight ratio of these cars is such that the Suzuki Maruti 1.3 litre engine should produce maximum torque at a range of RPM levels. It’s great to be here, surely!” he said excitedly.

Dinesh Jayewardene, Director of McLarens and the owner of the Formula 1300 cars, clarified why the cars were all equipped with Suzuki Maruti engines. Reliable, light weight and high torque, he said simply.

Digging deeper, he stated that the Suzuki Maruti offered steady acceleration and high torque across the entire RPM range making them ideal for racing, especially when fitted to low weight Formula McLarens 1300 chassis. “They are truly reliable and revs up lots of power even at low rpm, making them ideal for racing cars of this kind,” he elaborated.

Associated Motorways is the local distributor for Suzuki and Suzuki Maruti vehicles in Sri Lanka.
