Vijitha Wijemanne, the Head of Training at the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC), earned international recognition for his efforts in marshalling and marshal training by being awarded the FIA Track/Road Marshal of the year award.
The FIA Track/Road Marshal of the year award was set up to recognise the efforts of motor sport volunteers and officials at championship events around the world. This is the second occasion a Marshal from Sri Lanka has won the international award as CMSC’s Kalinga Samaraweera won the award in 2006.
Wijemanne’s award was announced at the Annual Volunteers Weekend held at the Sri Lanka Karting Circuit in Bandaragama recently. The Volunteers Weekend is celebrated across the world by organising events for Marshals to meet in a non-sporting arena for training, networking and fellowship.
Wijemanne received his initial training in marshalling at CAMS Australia and has been at the forefront of marshalling in Sri Lanka for many years. He is CMSC›s lead trainer in Sri Lanka.
