By Sarah Hannan The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) will host its sixth consecutive ‘Effie Awards’ next year. At a media briefing held end November at the Hilton Colombo Residencies, SLIM called for award nominations by organisations and announced its event partners the deadlines for submissions. SLIM gained rights to hold the first-ever Effie Awards in 2008 and considers it a significant achievement. The awards is the only global accolade in Sri Lanka that recognises achievement in meeting and exceeding marketing communications objectives which leads to effective communications. Since its inception in 1968 by the American Marketing Association (AMA), the Effie is considered as a global symbol of achievement. At the present time Effie celebrates effectiveness worldwide with the Global Effie, APAC Effie, Euro Effie, MENA Effie and over 39 national Effie programs. SLIM President Gamika De Silva stated: “Representing SLIM for the first time at the Effie partner summit in Brussels was indeed an achievement. We always strive to align local processes to global standards and see that Effie SL grows in stature. We will ensure that the quality is maintained at the highest level in this year’s Effie Awards.” An interesting skit was performed by the renowned ‘Podi Malli’ and ‘Loku Malli’ of the ‘Ala’ fame, which put the audience in a jolly mood. “With the intention of providing a truly global Effie experience to the Sri Lankan advertising and marketing stakeholders, SLIM has put in a lot of effort to streamline the local Effies process with the Effie worldwide practices and norms. As a result, two new speciality categories, David vs. Goliath & Renaissance, have been initiated this year,” SLIM Effie 2013 Project Chairman Leroy Ebert said, outlining standards of this year’s awards. Sampath Bank Plc Marketing and Business Development Deputy General Manager Tharaka Ranwala who heads the panel of judges said: “We will, this year, ensure that the guidelines given are strictly adhered to. Our panel of judges consist of a healthy mix of eminent marketing personal and advertising industry experts who I believe will make sure that both the international standards and strict evaluations are met with.” This year’s awards will feature 24 categories under products and services and also two new categories under the speciality category. Campaigns that ran between 1 July 2012 and 30 September 2013 are eligible to apply. The first deadline to submit entries will be on 3 January 2014 while the final deadline will be 9 January 2014. The first round of judging will be conducted on 13 January 2014 which will be followed by a final round of judging on 20 January 2014. The award levels of the Effie Awards 2013 Gala will be announced on 31 January 2014.
