University of Ruhuna and South China Sea Institute of Oceanology to sign MoU

The University of Ruhuna and South China Sea Institute of Oceanology will next week sign a landmark Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate with each other for further advancement of research and development.



Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology, Dr Tilak Gamage said the main objective of this MOU is to Establish a Joint Research Team, collaborating in the areas of mutual interest, priorities to include Indian Ocean field observations, climate change and their impacts in marine ecosystem; Organization of joint academic activities, such as training courses, seminars, symposia, conferences, or lectures; Exchange of scholars, including professors and postdoctoral fellows; and  Exchange of materials and publications.

The University of Ruhuna expect to share the experiences of research cruise with Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, University of Ruhuna;  offer shipping opportunities to the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology, University of Ruhuna, such as rental of equipments, on-board technical assistance, the Faculty shall bear its expenses and cost; and to provide opportunities to conduct joint collaborative research projects related to Indian Ocean with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology.

South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO) is one of the largest marine research institutes in China and a Key State Laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It has nearly 390 staff members, 50 Research Scientists, 43 PhD Advising Professors and importantly 11 members of the CAS’ ‘Hundred Talents Plan’.
