That’s the theme of ETD’s next program, to create the awareness that society, both corporate and individuals should include and welcome people with disabilities into our organisations and educational systems and appreciate them for what they do rather than keep them apart just because they are disabled and prefer to not notice them.
Sri Lanka has a long way to go before it becomes disabled friendly. These special persons are screaming out to be recognised, accepted and included. They are not asking for charity or sympathy. ‘Empathy’ is the buzz word.
ETD in its journey over the years, has endeavoured to create this awareness, and supported by you and me, can and will change the mindset of Sri Lankans, to be internationally recognised as a disabled friendly nation. It’s a long walk, but together we can do it.
We need to take away the perceptions that come through the cultural teachings. We need to take a good look inside us and ask the question ‘Are we walking the talk or just giving lip service by seeming to do things that will bring merit to ourselves or the donors who support these initiatives.
Stop, think, ponder and decide and then take action. Join ETD in its efforts to bring about a change. Let it begin with you.
(A note by ETD Chairman Charmaine Vanderhoeven).
