Muttiah Muralitharan and management go hand-in-hand. The world record holder of wickets in Tests, an unbelievable 800, held the very essence of sound management in his magical spin fingers and used it to good effect in his 133 Tests career which spanned 18 years. It hasn’t been long since Murali exited the world stage and memories of his exploits are still fresh in the minds of his fans. But if anyone needs reminding, then the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) offers them a rare opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with the legend on November 24th when they host an evening Spinning Around With Murali – The ‘Sport’ in Business at the Ivy Room, Cinnamon Grand.
In 2002, Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack rated Murali as the greatest Test match bowler ever. Murali became the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket when he overtook the previous record-holder Shane Warne on December 3, 2007. He has previously held the record when he surpassed Courtney Walsh’s 519 wickets in 2004, but he suffered a shoulder injury later that year, allowing Warne to overhaul him.
Murali was part of the World Cup-winning squad in 1996 and he played his part in some of Sri Lanka’s greatest cricketing moments. It was his 16 wickets that helped rout England at The Oval in 1998. He finished his remarkable Test career with more than 100 wickets against India, England and South Africa. His ability to turn the ball sharply on just about any surface coupled with his management skills created the magic of Murali.
