One of the major projects planned by ETD is the setting up of an inclusive park for children with special needs with disabled friendly equipment, either manufactured locally or brought down from abroad. At present there is no facility for these children to involve themselves in; they look on whilst others have fun and perhaps wish in their own minds that they too could join in.
The ultimate purpose of this project is to launch ‘Play for all’.
This project is to request the Government to allocate a space in a public park that will be constructed with disabled friendly equipment for the disabled children to join in and have fun and games along with the other kids. Parents will be encouraged to bring in these special kids and not let them feel left out or different. ETD will solicit the sponsorship of corporates to participate in this very unique venture and to help make Sri Lanka disabled friendly.
It’s important that as citizens of one country we create an inclusive society where all enjoy benefits that are tailor made to suite the different needs of people and give them an opportunity to access these benefits. More so for children with special needs; they too see the future in the environment they are exposed to and that restricts their thinking, makes them perceive society being only for those with all faculties and they grow up with a limited perception of what society offers them and naturally they pull back when it comes to their ability to participate on equal grounds.
Let’s give them this opportunity. Let’s together change our mind set and look at an open, inclusive society where all are accepted as one.
This is the main objective of ETD. Join them in their drive to make Sri Lanka a disabled friendly society. Let it begin with you. Whatever your ideas are, whatever you wish to express or participate in, take that step forward. Make the first move and give the kids a chance to enjoy themselves in a disabled friendly environment; the park being one such project.
The walk organised by ETD, ‘Obai Mamai Samai’ for 20 February has been postponed indefinitely.
A new date and calendar of events of ETD will be published shortly.
