Enable the Disabled hopes to organise English classes for specially challenged persons in association with a leading institution. The necessity for English both spoken and written was identified as being an asset and essential for those sitting for their Advanced level exams, enter universities, employment or for being employed.
With this in mind ETD has drawn up a project proposal to outline the need for such a program, Enabling the Disabled Making Sri Lanka Disabled Friendly
Project brief
Because disability and poverty are inextricably linked, poverty can never be eradicated until disabled people enjoy equal rights with non-disabled people – Lee (1999)
Introduction
People with disabilities have the same rights as all of us, to express their views, to work and to have a reasonable standard of living. Sadly these rights have not been fully realised for people living with disabilities in Sri Lanka. We believe what the learning of spoken English is a crucial step in changing this fact. Therefore we are proposing a spoken English training program that will allow disabled persons who are either looking to enter the workforce or already employed to improve their standard of English.
Goal
The main goal of ETD’s Spoken English Program initiative is to provide spoken English classes, free of charge, to disabled persons who wish to improve their communication in English in order to increase their employment prospects and upward mobility.
Scope
Classes would ideally be held twice a week, or weekends at a convenient duration and time and it would be ideal if the teachers are local due to the understanding of the vocabulary.
Target audience
A’ Level, University those seeking employment and employed people. Ideally suited for those who are mobility impaired and sight impaired.
Cost
ETD will supply Braille books and other necessary stationary and provide all on the ground liaising and support.
