The way forward: Proposed consolidation of financial institutions
The Central Bank’s Road Map for 2014 and a subsequent policy paper issued by the Regulator indicate that the consolidation of financial institutions is a key feature of the Monetary and Financial Sector Policies for 2014 and beyond. Many financial institutions are reported to be considering leveraging on the new proposal, as the country prepares for a stronger financial sector.
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) – UK’s Sri Lanka Branch announced its sixth knowledge sharing event organised in collaboration with exclusive knowledge partner, KPMG in Sri Lanka. The event captioned ‘The Way Forward: Proposed Consolidation of Financial Institutions’ will bring together corporate leaders to discuss organisational and industry related implications of the Central Bank’s proposal.
The event will feature presentations on the topic by Dinesh Weerakkody, Chairman of Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc and KPMG in Sri Lanka’s subject matter specialists including, Priyanka Jayatilake, Partner – Head of Advisory, Shiluka Goonewardene, Principal – Transactions and Restructuring and Suresh Perera, Principal – Tax and Regulatory.
The evening will also feature an interactive discussion with an eminent panel of corporate leaders and professionals including Central Bank of Sri Lanka Assistant Governor C.P.J. Siriwardene , Sampath Bank PLC Managing Director Aravinda Perera, Finance Houses Association of Sri Lanka Chairman Nalin Wijekoon and People’s Leasing Company Limited Chief Executive Officer D.P. Kumarage.
Commenting on the event, CMI’s Sri Lanka branch President Rohitha Mendis said, “The discussion sheds light on a topic that has gathered momentum over the past few weeks as reports of proposed mergers and acquisitions within banking and non-banking financial institutions take centre stage. Our objective of organising this event is to discuss the implications of this development.”
