A workshop on early intervention for children with special needs was presented by Enable the Disabled the CSR arm of The Management Club The workshop was conducted by Margaret R. Nathen from the Divinity School for Especial Needs Singapore, assisted by her Head Teacher Amor. The workshop was held on two days 8 December at the Kadirgamar Institute and 9 December at the Eden Café. The Chief Guest was the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom in Sri Lanka John Rankin and guest of Honour President Emiratus of The Management Club Fayaz Saleem. The workshop was well attended by teachers, care givers and parents, and proved to be a very valuable and interactive workshop. The outcome was that it was felt that the kids in Sri Lanka did not have proper facilities and the training available to them to make them graduate into normal schools. Nathen mentioned that above all, special needs children must be looked on as children, and every child whatever their special needs may be, have a right to schooling. She runs the only school in Singapore that guarantees a positive and significant difference in children in the first month of enrolment. She showed slides that proved her claim, and with the positive interaction and the feedback received, it proved that concerned people are hungry for such a facility in Sri Lanka. Nathen speaking from her heart proved that above all a special child needs the personal attention, caring and guiding to become a valuable member of society, and she stressed that every child has that capability and capacity to emerge but it has to be brought out and her methods is doing exactly that. Enable the Disabled in initial stages of discussion to franchise Nathen’s school here in Sri Lanka which with the help of philanthropists will become a reality in Sri Lanka in 2014. ETD is willing to help parents and caregivers to be in contact with Nathen for advice and guidance and anyone interested could contact Project Chairperson Jazaya Hassendeen on 777746735 or ETD President Charmaine Vanderhoeven on 0777305555.
