The Management Club Colombo held a timely webinar on 21 March with a participation of nearly 100 people. The participants were from various categories and were very enthusiastic in raising current questions to clear their doubts and myths.  

The Management Club Colombo, consisting of professional managers is taking efforts in organising contemporary seminars and workshops to benefit its members and professionals and business managers. TMC had decided to conduct a webinar as many people are having many questions and concerns about the vaccine. 

The world has been battling the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic has created problems and issues globally and affected all aspects of our lives. Following an exponential increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths, healthcare systems around the world have taken a major hit. Vaccination against COVID-19 is becoming a corner stone in the management and control of this devastating pandemic. 

Professor Suranjith Seneviratne was the speaker who is currently at the Institute of Immunity and Transplantation, Royal Free Hospital and University College London, UK and Health Services Laboratories, London, UK. He completed his basic medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo with First Class Honours, eight distinctions and ten Gold medals and was placed first in his year. He completed his MD in Internal Medicine at the University of Colombo, trained in Clinical Immunology and Allergy at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and completed a DPhil in Molecular Medicine at the University of Oxford. 

As stated by Professor Senevirathne, several COVID-19 vaccines have been approved for use in different countries and so far over 250 million doses have been given. Many new terms and concepts regarding the different COVID-19 vaccines have come into use.

Hemas Pharmaceuticals Senior Business Manager Riza Cassim functioned as a moderator to the webinar and shared the different aspects of the COVID-19 vaccines that the general public wanted to know. 

Sadaharitha Plantations Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer/The Management Club Colombo Chairman Dr. Pradeep Edward said TMC was pleased to conduct this kind of timely webinar. He further stated that the business leaders must look positive to move forward. 

Ranjith Fernando, as the Project Director expressed his pleasure in organising this timely and needed webinar as this provided specific answers for many of their questions, fears or misconceptions. He further stated that his team’s objective is to communicate this message to all the corporates in Sri Lanka. Questions discussed related to the vaccine were: 

  • Rapid development of the vaccine and is it safe? 
  • What are the commonest side effects of the vaccine? 
  • Can a child aged between 12 and 17 be vaccinated? 
  • Can a patient with food allergy/Anaphylaxis be a recipient? Or what are the precautions to be taken? 
  • Can a cancer patient who is on chemotherapy take the vaccination, if so, how long must he wait, after chemo? 
  • Can a patient who is on radiotherapy be a recipient of the vaccine? 
  • How long will the COVID vaccine protection last? 
  • Do I need to vaccinate myself if I have already had COVID? 
  • Can I get conceived after taking the vaccine? Any precautionary time period? 
  • Does the vaccine cause infertility? 
  • Any Prophylaxis medication before the vaccine? If so what? 
  •  What are the ingredients of the vaccine? Can we call it a vegan vaccine? 
  •  Usage of vaccine and alcohol 
  •  Vaccines and NCDs 
  •  In case I missed the second dose, what do I do? What is the procedure? 
  •  Breastfeeding and vaccination
